The Relationship Between Art And Commerce - 1261 Words
Historically, the relationship between art and commerce has been viewed as hierarchical. In this hierarchy of power, commerce dominates art and negatively influences artistic and creative potential of the art while art is viewed as a form of creative and cultural luxury that needs protection from external corruption. This argument has been brought up continually in academia, all similarly suggesting that there is something inherent in commerce and economics that undermines the purpose and authenticity of art. Whether this be the classic Bourdieun analysis of for-profit industries and their negative influence on art culture or the modern day parent who views the popular music and culture of her childââ¬â¢s generation as absent of value, there is a consistent contention at the core of commerce and arts relationship. While I undoubtedly agree that the politics of commerce and commercial activity has an effect on art, I do not believe that art therein lacks value because it was produc ed by a commercial entity or for profit. In this paper, I will argue that the contemporary relationship between art and commerce is one in which commerce does not domineer art and art culture but rather preserves and sustains it. Throughout the historical debate of this topic, many fallacies about the relationship between art and commerce have presented themselves.
